Hello Laurel, I had a similar idea with the proposed formation of a National Youth Service. I will e-mail it to you.

A National Youth Service – a timely suggestion

This year, Climate Change has created crisis after crisis in Canada with forest fires springing up over much of the country. Heavy rains have caused flooding, mud slides and washed out highways across the country. There has been lives lost and billions in damage much of it falling on Canadian families. Changing weather patterns are resulting in extreme climatic conditions with storms, and heat waves. Farmers are experiencing agricultural uncertainties with recurrent droughts and flooding.

As the UN red alert on the climate crisis pointed out, human existence is in far greater danger now than it ever has been previously. We need to mobilize to meet the challenge. A mobilization of human and material resources needs to take place throughout the world. Canada could mobilize with the creation of a National Youth Service of volunteering young men and women preparing us for the challenges of our times. This timely idea is worthy of serious consideration.

The formation of a National Youth Service could entail a voluntary enlistment of men and women 18 years of age and over who are not pursuing their education or presently working. They could be enlisted into a two year, with a voluntary third, year stint of National Service.

A National Youth Service could include a universal basic training for all enlistees. It would have the characteristics of a para-military service without a training to kill aspect. Healthy bodies and heightened fitness would be derived. It would provide training that would provide the enlistees with the skills and experience that will better their future while providing real service to the country.

The service could set primary goals for firefighting, reforestation, agricultural land restoration, flood control and remediation, providing emergency services and addressing civil crisis when and where needed. The service could also be tasked with the construction of affordable housing and needed public infrastructure. It could put an emphasis on the development of skills training including management and medical skills training, with offerings of educational studies on international affairs and international law. Enlistees would be taught the rules and guidance for good citizenship and embracing civic responsibilities. Where warranted those who have completed their National Service could be granted credits toward university and college degrees with financial support to assist in fulfilling their education.

The fived lives often derived from broken or dysfunctional families. With certainty many of these young people, without this oppormation of such a National Youth Service can provide meaning. purpose and discipline to troubled aimless young deprortunity, could turn to drugs and crime. Graduates of National Service have a better chance to be contributing members of society and country.

We are on a trajectory where we will increasingly need young people who can address the crises we will inevitably face. This, I believe is something that the Canadian public will support and could be a unifying force.
