I'm very impressed with how Canada is handling on the world stage. Let's hope Carney can keep up with the fast paced World. Change is the best way forward.

The time has come for practical engagement and counter balancing out trade relationship with the US. Kudos to the Carney trade team. Doug Ford has, once again, missed the bigger picture.

Good piece! Thanks Nathan. And I agree with Julia Walden above… in the anti-human rights marathon, the USA is unfortunately doing very well.

Spot on. Rational, reasonable, cautious and needed trade.

Julia Walden's avatar

Yes and re: human rights caution we have only to look across the border to Minneapolis.

After reading Nate’s reassuring and insightful piece, the old truism seems to hold more than ever: “politics makes for strange bedfellows.”

It is what it is, and I respect the logic of seeking stability and progress wherever we can take it, when seeking it next door seems out of the question.

Thank you, Nate, for examining the issue so thoroughly and intelligently 😌🙏🏼

Agreed. Let’s let the intelligent and non-Populist politicians handle this one. Cars are all going to be made and driven by robots soon anyway as the people with capital have decided AI is more important than employment or food or shelter for humans. If jobs are what you’re trying to protect you might have to think beyond the antiquated notion of “auto-workers” at this point. The “call me on my cell” approach to leadership isn’t going to cut here. Good job Carney. More of this.

Thank you, Nate. Thank you, Mark Carney.

Will you, Nate, be organizing community support networks, co-ordinating the leadership of the same and organizing strategy to those who survive a first attack?

With the the gravitas, respect and insight Carney has, the only thing more ridiculous than Ford's comments is the belly-aching and whining you spouted when he passed you over for a cabinet position.

Can you just stick to the issue at hand and pass on the opportunity to take a swipe at Doug Ford. In the vacuum of Liberal leadership immediately after Trudeau bailed, I appreciated that Ford stood up for Ontario and Canada. You failed to win the Liberal leadership race in Ontario and your party was destroyed by Mr. Ford in the election that followed. You may think you can do a better job, but you haven't earned a position to challenge him.

Janice's avatar

The only thing Doug Ford “stands up for” is himself and, his rich cronies.

Peter's avatar

Yet somehow he wins again and again. Go figure.

Val Goems's avatar

No, No -- Ford wins because the Liberal Leadershio is devoid of a true political slayer, like Nate!

Ontario has to thus endure this oversized hollow reign!

Peter's avatar

Val, If I used your description of Ford and applied it to an 'oversized' woman, there'd be hell to pay.

Nate did his best to win the Liberal leadership race but could not overcome the sizzle/no substance of Crombie. I think Nate could make a bigger difference if given the mandate to do so, but he doesn't have the panache it takes to win a party's leadership - not currently anyway. Nate would do well to run for the Mayor of Toronto later this year - he'd probably win and if he did make a difference (that's a low bar that Chow has set), it would give him the brand awareness to make a go of the provincial leadership down the road.

Canada is at War!

Canadian auto workers have been laid off by their American Masters.

Just yesterday, the Governor of America's most-populous state bested the Premier of Canada's largest, in stating that "the World needs to stand up to the kidnapper and invader-in-chief!"

Carney has taken the lead; Ford is led by the modern fuhrer.

If America had the likes of Nate ES as its prudent leader, the world today would literally be the closest thing to Utopia! Tariff-less Trade, Solar Energy, Cleaner Environment, and a more saner -- and safer-- citizenry.

But alas, the stars-aligning will continue to be an elusive dream for the mostly-duped southerners there. And their oppressed rest.
